Powerschool Data Breach Statements
Oneonta City Schools
The Alabama State Department of Education informed school districts in Alabama, including Oneonta City Schools on January 7, 2025, of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool. PowerSchool is the ALSDE’s third-party software provider for housing student information.
On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool experienced a targeted attack, which impacted several school districts both domestically and internationally. This data breach was an attack on PowerSchool internationally and was not a cyberattack directed at Alabama or any particular Alabama school system.
We have been advised that accessed information may include personal information such as names, addresses, and email addresses. Social security numbers were not involved for any Alabama students or teachers.
PowerSchool has assured us that the incident is contained, and there is no evidence of ongoing unauthorized activity or operational disruptions. They have implemented enhanced security measures, deactivated the compromised credentials and continue monitoring the situation closely.
Oneonta City Schools will continue to provide information to our families, educators, and stakeholders as it becomes available from the State Department of Education and PowerSchool.
As we learn more, impacted individuals will be contacted directly with more specific details.

PARENTSQUARE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM - IMPLEMENTED AUGUST 2024
Dear Oneonta City Schools Families,
We are excited to announce we are implementing a new form of school-to-home communication at Oneonta City Schools called ParentSquare. This unified communications platform is designed to keep parents and guardians informed and encourage greater engagement and connection while providing a safe method for all school, parent, student and athlete communications.
Invitations to sign up for Parent Square will be sent to all parent or guardian email addresses on file with the district. If you do not receive the invitation or want to go ahead and get started, visit www.parentsquare.com/signin and register your account using the phone number or email address on file with the district.
View this video on how to get started. The video is available in Spanish.
All district and school, grade level and classroom information will be sent to your computer or phone via email and/or text. For even more convenience, download the ParentSquare app (available for free for iOS and Android devices).
Have questions? Click the question mark in the top right corner of the desktop version of Parent Square or the Help tab on the app (tap the triple bar icon at the top left) to find answers to most of your questions.
More information will follow as we look forward to implementing this new tool.
We hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Craig Sosebee
Superintendent
